Interview for the Implementation Plan of AFREC and AFRA Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

Cairo, Egypt 21 August 2017: Mr. Atef Marzouk, the Interim executive director of the African Energy Commission (AFREC) met Dr. Atef Abdel-Fattah, the Chairman of the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority and the current Chairperson of the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research Development and Training Related to Nuclear and Technology (AFRA)

In 1988, the African Member States requested the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to help in the establishment of regional arrangement for cooperation in the field of nuclear science and technology in Africa. This initiative laid the foundations for AFRA that entered into force in April 1990 and currently includes 39 African countries.

AFREC participated at the AFRA Regional Strategic Cooperation Framework 2014-2018. AFRA-RCF Meeting was in December 2012 in Algiers, Algeria.

The main objective of this meeting is to accelerate the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed between the AFREC and AFRA since January 2011.

Only South Africa has nuclear power plants in the continent and some of African countries are willing for energy generation form the nuclear energy such as Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Nigeria Ghana and Kenya.

Developing the capacity building of the African countries is the main point that was discussed during the meeting.
